The cheap battery in your next EV might charge in five minutes. That's the BYD claim leading this week, and it's a bigger deal than the fast-charging headlines you're used to, because it's bolted to the budget chemistry, not the premium stuff. Also on deck: Utah's plug-in solar law that no product can legally fill yet, a big-battery electric BMW, Polestar getting shoved out of the US, and a week in China that should worry Detroit. Let's go.

Fast charging usually costs extra. BYD wants to change that. Its new Blade Battery 2.0 runs on LFP, short for lithium iron phosphate, which Ziroth calls the cheapest of the mainstream lithium chemistries, and BYD says the pack can do a 10 to 70 percent top-up in about five minutes, or a full charge in nine. LFP already powers a lot of budget and mid-range EVs because it's cheap and runs cool, but it's always charged slower than the pricey nickel-based cells. Doing minute-scale charging on the cheap chemistry is the whole trick here. How? A buffer battery, which is a stationary pack sitting next to the charger. It sips maybe 200 kW from the grid, stores it up, then dumps up to 1.5 megawatts into your car in a burst, so the site doesn't need a monster grid connection. On the cell side, BYD says it improved the electrolyte and added silicon to the anode to stop the lithium plating that fast charging can cause. It also quotes 5,000 cycles, a warranty stretched to 155,000 miles, and only about three extra minutes when charging from minus 30 Celsius because the pack preheats itself. BYD is aiming for 20,000 of these flash chargers in China by the end of 2026, with smaller rollouts in Europe and the UK. All of this is BYD's own testing, and the charger network is still ramping, so give the timelines some room. But the number that matters isn't five minutes. It's the letters LFP.
Utah became the first state to make plug-in solar, sometimes called balcony solar, as easy to use as a household appliance. And almost nobody is using it. KUTV followed Eric O'Brien, who spent just under $800 on three panels and an inverter, plugged the setup into an outdoor outlet, and has saved $78 since February according to his app. The inverter is the box that converts the panels' direct current into the alternating current your house actually runs on. The pitch, from state Representative Ray Ward, is that renters and people who can't afford rooftop solar could buy a small kit, plug it in, and trim their bill without an electrician or the utility's permission. Plug-in solar is already common in Germany, so this isn't unproven technology. The holdup is a safety standard. The real worry with these kits is backfeeding a home circuit through a normal plug, which is why a testing lab's sign-off matters before this stuff ships widely. UL, the same outfit that certifies your toaster, has now written a standard, but it can't certify any products until a technical committee forms to approve it, and nobody would give KUTV a timeline. There's a catch inside the catch, too: the standard as written still says you'd need an electrician to install a system, which Ward says defeats the entire point. That one line decides whether plug-in solar reaches store shelves or stays a niche curiosity.
BMW's Electric iX5 Bets on a 144 kWh Battery and 460 kW Charging

BMW's next X5 comes in every flavor of powertrain, and the one EV people are talking about is the electric iX5. Out of Spec Reviews got an early walkaround of a pre-production car. The pitch is simple: a battery big enough that charging stops being something you think about. BMW puts the usable pack at about 144 kWh in the US and lists peak charging of 460 kW on an 800-volt system. Starting price is $79,800 before roughly $1,450 destination, though the host figures a realistically optioned one lands near $90,000. Power is 570 horsepower, zero to sixty in 4.4 seconds. BMW claims a 10 to 80 percent charge in about 22 minutes, and the host expects closer to 25 in the real world, still about twice the pace of a similar-size Rivian R1S pack. Here's the problem, though: charging above 400 kW outruns almost every US public station today, so that speed advantage mostly sits unused until the fast sites catch up. That build-out is happening through IONNA, a charging network BMW helped start with several other automakers. The host also flags a couple of odd gaps for the money, no dog mode for leaving pets in the car, and flush door handles some people will hate. The pack is assembled by Rimac, the car is built in South Carolina, and the same body will eventually take gas, diesel, hybrid, and even a hydrogen version in 2028. None of it is proven until BMW ships and someone drives it, but if the specs hold up in independent testing, this goes straight on the road-trip short list.
Why Polestar Can No Longer Sell New EVs in the US

Polestar is getting ready to stop selling new cars in the United States, and The Electric Viking lays out why. According to the video, Polestar told dealers that a US rule on Chinese-linked connected-vehicle technology means it won't get certified to sell for the 2027 model year and beyond. The rule, adopted in January 2025, bars vehicles with certain Chinese-linked Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, and satellite systems on national-security grounds, tied to worries about data collected on US owners. Polestar is majority owned by China's Geely, and the Commerce Department declined to grant it an exemption. Here's the part that has dealers confused: sister brand Volvo, also Geely-owned, was cleared to keep importing. Nobody has a clear public answer for why the two got different outcomes. If you already own a Polestar, this isn't a fire drill, service continues and the remaining Polestar 3 and 4 inventory is still for sale. The people absorbing the hit are the roughly 32 US dealers, most of whom would shift to just servicing existing cars. One is reportedly sitting on a 76-day supply of cars he can no longer replace. The video's own theory near the end, that Polestar could have closed its cars off from the internet to comply and chose not to, is presented as speculation, not fact. Worth watching the Volvo contrast, because it suggests the rule is being applied brand by brand, which leaves a door open if Polestar changes its hardware.
Why China's Performance EVs Keep Pulling Ahead

Cars with Miles spent a week in China on one question: why do the country's EVs keep leapfrogging what everyone else sells, and why can't Americans buy them? Fair warning up front, which the host repeats himself: Li Auto and Xiaomi covered some of the travel, though he says no money changed hands. Take that caveat seriously, then look at the numbers anyway, because they're hard to fake. Xiaomi started building cars about two years ago and now sells a 1,500-horsepower sedan that hits 60 in under 2.5 seconds. But the acceleration isn't the real story. Scale is. The host reports China has over 4 million charge ports against roughly a quarter million in the US, and a public 500 kW charger is normal there while US drivers rarely see above 350 kW on paper. He credits about $230 billion of government money poured in between 2009 and 2023. At a Li Auto stop he charges a Mega from 13 to 90 percent in around 15 minutes. He drives its assisted-driving system through cone-strewn streets and comes away saying a European brand's system would have hit a parked car. So why can't you buy one? Steep US tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, not a lack of interest. The wall is policy, not engineering. Americans may not get these cars for years. But if even a fraction of this pressure reaches Ford, GM, and Toyota, the cars you can buy get better.
